Understanding and Using Newsgroups
Different ways to use Newsgroups
by Peter Doshi
Newsgroups (aka Usenet) can be used in a multitude of ways. Not everybody
will use it the same and that is part of the beauty of news. Many people
will remain lurkers, while others
may be active in the contribution of posts.
What you do with Usenet is your business. What you say, though, is not.
Remember at all times that the person all the way across the world, another
human, just like you, will be reading your post. So, be polite and don't
start to engage in any flame wars.
Here are some typical uses of Usenet:
- Getting help with a problem
- Participating in conversations with many people
- Posting messages for items you have forsale
- Looking for items wanted
Remember, Usenet covers about any topic imaginable. Chances are, if there's
a topic you are interested in, there is a newsgroup with that same
particular focus. For help on finding groups, see Getting
setup with Newsgroups.
