VNC: Tips and tricks

Making VNC run faster

Change your background/wallpaper to a solid color instead of any pattern, texture, picture, or image.

When the background is a solid color, it let's VNC send updates MUCH quicker to the vncviewer than if it has to send a complicated image or pattern. A simple movement like dragging a window will cause the background to refresh what was under the window previously, and so if this is a solid color, like the windows default green, it will do this quite a bit (read DRAMATICALLY) quicker.

Use Vncviewer when you can

The vncviewer program which comes on all versions runs a lot faster than using the java client (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc). Using the java client is also quite heavy on the system, so if a vncviewer exists for your system architecture, USE IT! Currently, the vncviewer is available on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Solaris 2.5, SunOS 5.5, Linux, FreeBSD, Macintosh, and DEC Alpha OSF1 3.2.

Finding your partner's IP Address

Unfortunately, most dial-up account subscribers (VSNL users included) have dynamic IP addresses, which means that everytime you reconnect to VSNL, you are provided a new IP address. Any IP address can be reused, but cannot be used more than once at the same time. So when you connect, you are given an IP Address which is unique to your computer. The question arises in figuring out that IP address.

One quick way to figure it out is run the program called winipcfg. Run this once and you're connected to the Internet. It will show you your current IP address.

The problem is a bit more difficult if both the client and server are using dynamic IP addresses, as how do you know what the other computer's IP address is when you're not there and can't connect to it to find it. It's almost like a Catch 22.

One such solution (if you have the luxury of having a person at both ends) is to email the other person. In your email, include your IP address which you got from winipcfg.

Keep in Mind...

  • The more cluttered your desktop, the slower the transmission will occur
  • Your screen's resolution won't change, so if you use 1024x768 and the client machine is running at 800x600, he will have to use scrollbars when using your computer. It will not fit on one machine. For best results, use the same or smaller resolution on the server computer.
  • The lower the resolution, the less desktop space there is and therefore less data to send to the client.
  • Using Active Desktop is murder. See transmission speeds up to 10 times slower using Active Desktop. Turn Active Desktop off on the server before using VNC.
  • Using a high color depth increases network traffic tenfolds and so the lowest possible tolerable color depth should be used to speed up the connection.
  • There is also a VNC FAQ to answer any other questions you might have. If you want to talk to The Guide, send us some feedback.
