VNC: Getting Started and Using VNC

There are two steps in using VNC. One is starting the vncserver, the second is connecting to it with the vncviewer.

Starting the VNC Server

To start vncserver, click Start --> Programs --> VNC --> WinVNC 3.3.2

Starting the VNC Viewer

To start the vncviewer, run vncviewer.exe and connect to the server. This program, vncviewer.exe, may be either located on a floppy or in Start --> Programs --> VNC --> Vncviewer depending on your installation.

Once you start, you will be prompted with a window like this:

You will need to fill in the hostname and display number. The hostname can either be an IP address of a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) like home.netscape.com. The display number is set to zero by default, by can be changed any time in the server preferences. If it is zero and the IP address you need to connect to is 202.54.2.58, then you would enter your VNCserver as

202.54.2.58:0

Note the colon between the two.

If you don't know the IP address of a machine, run the program winipcfg at the Start --> Run menu and look for the IP Address.

Using the Java viewer

The VNC servers also contain a small web server, which can serve the Java classes needed for a browser to connect back to the server. You can then see your desktop from any Java-capable browser! For some servers you will need to specify the location of the class files when starting the VNC server. The server listens for HTTP connections on port 5800+display number. So to view server 2 on machine snoopy, you would point your web browser at:

http://snoopy:5802/

The applet will prompt you for your password before displaying the desktop.
