VNC: Installing on Windows 95/98 and Windows NT

The setup is actually quite simple. In an effort to give you more flexibility, the creators of VNC seperated the vncviewer and the vncserver.

First, a few definitions:

vncviewer = the program which allows
	    you to connect and work
	    on the vncserver
vncserver = the server software which
            lets clients connect and
            serves them your desktop
There are two types of installation:
  1. Normal Installation - Install the vncserver and vncviewer
  2. Minimal Installation - Install just the vncviewer
If you do not manage either computer, then you ought to consult with the person who does before installing any software on his machine.

Normal Installation

  1. Download VNC from http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/download.htm. Make sure to choose Preferred compression scheme: zip (.zip) otherwise you will download a file your cannot compress. Next, scroll down to where it says Win32 (Intel) and click Download.
  2. Once the file is downloaded onto your hard drive, you need to unzip it. If you do not have any unzip (compression) program, then download one immediately. Almost all software on the Internet is compressed and requires you to have software to uncompress it. You can get shareware software at http://www.download.com/ - look for WinZip.
  3. It will unzip into two directories, winvnc and vncviewer. The winvnc is the directory you need to go into to install both the client and server.Go into the winvnc directory and run setup.exe. After setup, VNC will be installed.
  4. Check to see your installation was correct by insuring there is a Start Menu --> Programs --> VNC entry.
  5. Now to let clients use this computer, you need to start the program and also set a password.
  6. Start the program by running Start --> Programs --> VNC --> WinVNC 3.3.2
  7. If this is the first time running the program, it will prompt you for a password. Take caution in selecting this password This password gives a client all access to your computer and so this password should be chosen carefully and with thought.
  8. Once the password is set, VNC is running and clients can now connect to it.
  9. Your installation is complete.
Minimal Installation

  1. Download VNC from http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/download.htm. Make sure to choose Preferred compression scheme: zip (.zip) otherwise you will download a file your cannot compress. Next, scroll down to where it says Win32 (Intel) and click Download.

Almost all software on the Internet is compressed and requires you to have software to uncompress it. You can get shareware software at http://www.download.com/ - look for WinZip.
  3. It will unzip into two directories, winvnc and vncviewer. All you need is the vncviewer.exe file in the vncviewer directory. Put that file on a floppy diskette so that you can connect to the server from whatever Windows machine you happen to be on. Simply pop in your floppy and run the program. Isn't it great that they made it small enough to fit on a floppy!
  4. Your installation is complete
