Heuristics and Metrics

  • Heuristics
    • Speak the user's language
    • Be consistent
    • Minmise the user's memory load
    • Build flexible and efficient systems
    • Design aesthetic and minmalist systems
    • Use chunking (short documents, single thought)
    • provide progressive levels of detail
    • give navigational feedback
    • don't lie to the user

  • Metrics (the weightages may vary from site to site)
    • Task Time (the number of seconds it took users to find answers for specific questions about the content)
    • Errors
    • Memory (normal : 5-9 chunks; web : 2-3 chunks)
    • Time to recall site structure
    • Subjective Satisfaction
