Locate the Internet Setup Assistant from your hard disk. It should be at

To fill up the information in the Internet Setup Assistant please keep these info handy:

1. The letter from VSNL which give your details about login name, DNS, E-mail etc.

2. Modem type i;e. the name of the modem and the model like Apple Geoport Express Modem or US Robotics 56.6k.

Now you are ready and almost there. Please read the information carefully and also check out the images which are in the links. Click the links and images will open in a new window. They help a lot in understanding your configuration. Do the steps below carefully. Do not miss out any information. It is not fatal but you might lose some valuable time.

1. Double click on the Internet Setup Assistant icon and when the window appears click on Update button. Do not press Register button, as it does not work here in India. We do not have online registration system as yet. Click the button at the bottom right of the screen to go ahead.

2. The next screen is for information. Read the information and click the next arrow at the bottom right.

3. In the Internet configuration screen you decide to make a new configuration. Click on Add Internet Configuration and click next.

4. In the Configuration name and connection type screen you have to type a name for the configuration and select the type. Give a name that you can later on identify easily with your Internet Service Provider like "NetConnect VSNL". It is assumed that you are using Modem type of connection.
   
   The LAN configuration is only a bit different. It does not have the modem selection in the next step. You jump directly to IP address configuration. And you need Subnet Mask and Router Address. Rest of the steps are same.

5. The Modem settings screen is where you select the modem that you have from the popup menu. If you do not see your modem, check if you have installed the drivers that came with your modem.
   If not check in the System CD under CD Extras: Extra Modem Scripts. Install them and maybe you have the modem listed there. Alternatively you can go to the manufacturers site later on and download the Script.
   Else use the Null Modem Script temporarily till you get the script you need. Now select the port to connect and type of Telephone you have, Tone or Pulse.

6. The Configuration information is where you type one of the telephone numbers provided by VSNL, the login name like (abcd@bom1) and your password (whatever VSNL has provided you).

7. The dial up connection for VSNL does not have a fixed IP address so you select the "No" radio button.

8. Fill up the Domain Name Servers (DNS) screen. For Mumbai it is (primary) 202.54.1.30 and (secondary) 202.54.1.18. VSNL has provided you with these numbers. Fill in the numbers provided. Also you can to fill up the Domain Name. It is vsnl.net.in for VSNL. It is optional.

9. Now fill up the E-mail account and the host computer. You e-mail account will be like abcd@bom1.vsnl.net.in. The SMTP (Simple Mail transfer Protocol) server for this case will be like bom1.vsnl.net.in

10. The E-mail address and password screen requires you to enter your e-mail address which is the same as before i;e. abcd@bom1.vsnl.net.in. Also fill in the password it is same as your login password.

11. In the Newsgroup Host Computer screen you can leave the NNTP blank. VSNL has not supplied us with any information on the same. You can later on edit and enter the information whenever you have one.

12. The Internet Setup Assistant tries to log on immediately if you do not deselect the check box marked "Connect when finished". The Conclusion screen is where you do this setting.

13. The Conclusion screen also provides you with the details you have entered previously. In this screen click on the details button and see if you have missed anything. Click go ahead to confirm the settings. The window will automatically close.

14. Now you are ready to connect to VSNL. However you have to make some changes to the PPP Control Panel manually.
